Hongkong as terminus may have been headed for the United

States on leaving there with Philippine cargo, and vice-

versa, so that the foregoing totals may not represent the tonnage moved, especially as many of the vessels would not be fully loaded or would have cargo for Japanese and other ports en route. Thus an independent estimate gives Imports from the United States in British bottoms to be 121,000 tons excluding 12,000 tons brought in Canadian steamers from Vancouver; and 23,520 tons as Exports to the United States by British vessels; and these figures probably represent fairly the interests at stake in 1919.

In 1919, however, British shipping was still in process of recovery from the war and doubtless the in- portance of the issue will be greater during the current

year.
